As part of the arrangement announced earlier this year, local communication provider Starhub will be the title sponsors of this season's League Cup tournament, the second domestic cup competition for the involving S.League clubs.

With the exception of Harimua Muda, the remaining 12 teams of the league will be taking part in this tournament, now called "Starhub League Cup", that will kick off in late July and conclude in mid August before the resuming of the Round 19 fixtures of the S.League.

Unlike last year's edition's "knock-out" format, the organizers decided to opt for a round-robin basis with four groups with three teams each, and the top two teams from each group will qualify for the next round.

In the drawing ceremony that was held this afternoon at the FAS headquarters at Jalan Besar Stadium, the groupings of the teams are as follows: -
  • GROUP A: SAFFC, Tanjong Pagar United, Brunei DPMM
  • GROUP B: Albirex Niigata (Singapore), Balestier Khalsa, Geylang United
  • GROUP C: Home United, Courts Young Lions, Hougang United
  • GROUP D: Tampines Rovers, Woodlands Wellington, Gombak United
Speaking to this blog following the outcome of the draw, Mr Koh Mui Tee, the General Manager of last year's winners Albirex Niigata (Singapore) shared his thoughts.

"On the papers, it's not going to be easy for us, based on the previous outings we had against both Balestier and Geylang in the league, where we lost 2-1 to the Tigers at home and drew 0-0 away with the Eagles.

"Nonetheless, we will put up our best performance in defending this title and hope to be the first side in the tournament history to retain the trophy that will be something for us to cheer for." said Koh.

As an added incentive to the teams and players, it is understood that the prize monies for the winning team had increased to $30,000 with a MVP (Most Valuable Player) award to be awarded to the best player of the tournament that carries another prize monies of $1,000.

  1. Always sponsor are welcomed. I think that it is great that there is a sponsor like them. But I think that more sponsors are even better to get a high quality tournament.
