On a royal invitation to Shah Alam...

It's always a privilege to be part of the Singapore contingent to travel up to Shah Alam, the state capital of Selangor for the annual "Sultan of Selangor Cup" event. Initiated in the year 2001 by the present ruler of Selangor, the aim of the event is to foster the footballing ties between the two sides, whose illustrious rivalry dated back since the 1920 when the Malaya Cup first started. Both Selangor and Singapore take turn to host the event, with Jalan Besar Stadium played hosts last year , this year's edition is shifted back to the 80,000-capacity Shah Alam Stadium (pictured above). The whole episode had been frustrating! (edited)

The VVIPs admiring the trophy . Sometimes I have been wondering if this country is a nation of glory-hunters, that when things get tough people try to find an easy way out to avoid the calamity to be fallen on them? This legend who used to be feared by strikers in Asia for his tackling, can you tell who he is? I can't help but having that conclusion in the recent days when I tried to encourage some of my middle-aged colleagues to come down to see those footballing legends of the seventies who came together for the annual " Sultan of Selangor Cup ". You know the man in the middle now, but will your kids know who he is and importantly can you tell those two on his both sides? These are the lot who are still clamouring those wonderful days of the Malaysia Cup rivalry between Singapore and Selangor, and could easily roll out those names of those legendary players from their tongues. These guys were capable to pull in a full-house at Kallang in their heydays So there was this

That special kind of magic...

"Singapore-Selangor" was a crowd-puller ** The unique football rivalry between Singapore and Selangor can only be appreciated by those who have lived through that era. This rivalry is unique in the sense that it is not caused by different social classes (as in Argentina's elite-based River Plate and working-class linked Boca Juniors) or close-town rivalries like AC Milan and Inter. Instead, it was likened to the rivalry between Manchester United and Liverpool. Despite languishing in the lower tier of the Malaysian League back in 1993, both Singapore and Selangor entertained a packed National Stadium in a second-division clash. To this day, some of us are still savouring those nostalgic moments of the swinging 1970s when the likes of Quah Kim Song, Samad Allapitchay, and Dollah Kassim were up against some of the best players in Asia those days, namely Mokhtar Dahari, Soh Chin Aun, and Santokh Singh who were playing for both Malaysia and Selangor.
