While the match between Singapore and Paraguay has been scheduled on the 13th November as the opener of the upcoming 𝐌𝐢𝐳𝐮𝐡𝐨 𝐁𝐥𝐮𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞 - 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐊𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐠 𝐅𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐛𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐒𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐞 at the National Stadium, how many are actually aware that this is a long-overdue fixture?
However, the match did not materialise, and the whole thing fizzled out without follow-up; this was probably due to the earlier reported glitches that may have hindered it.
In an article by the same masthead one month and a half earlier, it offered a few clues as to why no football matches of certain prominence did not take place at the 27,000-seated venue since it was opened in May 2007.
"One of the issues is the casting of shadows onto the pitch by the lightning beams on both ends, as well as concerns over the readiness of the place for a TV production of the match live," said Mr Quah Kim Song, the then FAS director of competitions, as reported by ST in its 12th November 2008 edition.
Although the above-mentioned issue had been resolved when the Singapore Sports Council (the former name of Sport SG) added more floodlights to negate the shadows, the anticipated match did not take place at the Platform, which remained as the venue for the National Day Parades and Singapore Grand Prix till its demolition in March 2023.
The event is the first proprietary sports property in The Kallang Group’s growing portfolio, created to deliver flagship experiences that engage audiences and capture emerging market opportunities.
Besides the triumvirate, the Singapore national team will also be involved in this showpiece, which is also part of the Singapore-Japan 60th Anniversary (SJ60) celebrations to commemorate six decades of diplomatic relations between Singapore and Japan.

SUPPOSED TO BE ON THE FLOATING PLATFORM IN 2009
According to a Straits Times (ST) report back in 23rd December 2008, there was actually a plan to stage a friendly between the Lions and La Albirroja at the iconic Marina Bay Floating Platform in February 2009, with the broadsheet stated 11th February 2009 slot of the venue had been booked by the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) for the match.![]() |
