"Mak, I missed the LAST BUS home, help!!!"

Please plan your journey home I would only say my eyelids barely open when the League Cup match between Balestier Khalsa and Brunei DPMM proceed into second half. It wasn't a boring match to some extend with some few exchanges in between the two, but the only grump was the fact that second 45 only kicked off at 2235hrs. As all may have guessed it - the activation of the Lightning Warning System (LWS) had caused the match to be kicked off at 2125hrs (which on normal day would have seen a game finish by that). While let's not argue what the activation of the LWS would caused, since we all know it's safety at stake and there shall not be compromise on this aspect. However, some fine tunings should be considered to work around once the activation is on with one aspect would be the inconvenience to those at game without their own transport. With the public transport normally ceased at around or close to midnight, I wonder if there's any contingency measure, sho

Jonathan and Guntur propelled Wolves to the League Cup

Jonathan's (facing camera) equalizer set the pace for Wolves's win  With goals from former S.League players Jonathan Xu and Guntur Djafril in each half coupled the late strike by Haziq Sudhir that hammered the last nail to the coffin, NFL Division Two side Admiralty FC secured the last ticket to the Starhub League Cup by staging an upset over Singapore Recreation Club (SRC) of Division One with 3-1 scoreline at the Jalan Besar Stadium. Little would expected from the Wolves decked in black outfit when they conceded a goal in 20th minute that witnessed Shaiful Fauzi placed the Padang side on the pole position in the Playoff Final that saw the two finalists emerged after shrugging off their opponents last week on the same ground. Guntur Djafril (in black outfit) was Admiralty's another goal scorer One of SRC's  (blue-yellow shirted) miscued offences Nonetheless, it was a composed and confident show put by Admiralty towards the end of the game that saw the

Let NFL clubs have a shot at Singapore Cup again, not just League Cup

(The entry is formulated with a media release issued by the S.League SBU pertaining to the Starhub League Cup on 3rd May 2013) “We are pleased to involve the NFL teams in one of the biggest professional cup competitions in Singapore, as we have always regarded them as a big part of the local football fraternity. This is also a good chance for NFL to experience a professional level of football, which will aid in their long term development. We look forward to another year of quality football in the StarHub League Cup.” Those words were by S.League CEO Lim Chin in a media statement issued by the League authority over the weekend making known the involvement of the lower-tier National Football League (NFL) clubs' in the mid-season Starhub League Cup. Top it up to spur all up as Starhub League Cup 2012 set for another thriller...

The League Cup Draw result (credit: Albirex Niigata (S) FC ) As part of the arrangement announced earlier this year , local communication provider Starhub will be the title sponsors of this season's League Cup tournament, the second domestic cup competition for the involving S .League clubs . With the exception of Harimua Muda, the remaining 12 teams of the league will be taking part in this tournament, now called "Starhub League Cup", that will kick off in late July and conclude in mid August before the resuming of the Round 19 fixtures of the S.League. Unlike last year's edition's "knock-out" format, the organizers decided to opt for a round-robin basis with four groups with three teams each, and the top two teams from each group will qualify for the next round. In the drawing ceremony that was held this afternoon at the FAS headquarters at Jalan Besar Stadium, the groupings of the teams are as follows: - GROUP A: SAFFC, Tanjong P

Sorry... I was not concentrating..

As I was filing my match report for the earlier 3rd-4th placing match between Home United and Tampines Rovers that I wasn't paying much attention during the League Cup final match between Hougang United and Albirex Niigata (Singapore). But what I did realize was Canadian winger Jordan Webb was the man of the night for the wrong reason when he came so close to end the trophy drought of the under-achievers in the dying moments of the second half of the extra time, before agonizingly saw his spot-kick saved by White Swans' keeper Yoshito Matsushita that gifted the Japanese their first ever title since joining S.League in 2003. According to one of the tweets I gathered Webb was inconsolable that he was not present at the prize presentation.  At the post match press conference, the Cheetah coach Aide Iskandar (pictured above) credited his boys' performance as "well-disciplined" which he hopes to carry forward to their remaining campaign. "Both teams starte

Redemption for the "Poor Cousin"...

The League Cup Trophy The scheduling of the League Cup has long been a debatable issue since the inception of this tournament some five years old that either saw it took place during the pre-season or middle of the league fixtures. Being widely perceived as the "poor cousin" of the more prestigious two - the league championship and the Singapore Cup, it's no wonder regional football blogger, Antony Sutton of "Jakarta Casual" have this to say. "Just because they have a League Cup in England doesn't mean every other country needs to copy it... This is an unnecessary addition to an overcrowded fixture list." commented Antony in his recent entry upon received the media release of the Cup draw held on Friday. What the Jakarta-based blogger said is not without his concern. Bear it in mind that weeks ago, the league had undergone a massive fixture scheduling that as many as 40 matches (as I was told) were being postponed as the result due to v

Radical Thoughts on fully utilize the League Cup

The League Cup trophy on parade before the kick-off Nothing on the final itself, as I actually blogged this entry before I headed down to the ground. Universally, it is always agreed that the "League Cup" in whatsoever format or name around the footballing world has always been the "poor cousin" of the more prestigious League Championship and the "main" Cup competition. Not belittle or demeaning the stature of this Cup tournament, it's not uncommon for people to ridicule this competition as a "minnows' Cup". Etoile star Flavien Michelini is extremely dangerous with his passing and moving with the ball. After all, this is a tournament that witnessed some "giants-killing" acts by some of the minnows over the under-par big teams. Don't get me wrong, as there were some really commendable performances that fuelled some interesting discussions after those matches (someone mentioned to me if the Lions could play li

Tough League Cup draw for Home, Gombak and Tampines‏

(Media information by Football Association of Singapore ) SINGAPORE, 9 February 2010 – Of the top four S.League clubs to receive a bye to the quarter-finals, Home United, Gombak United and Tampines Rovers find themselves facing with a challenging League Cup journey after they were drawn in the same half of the competition’s quarter-finals. Home United have been drawn against 2008 League Cup winners Gombak United in their quarter-final match-up, with the winner of the Tampines Rovers – Woodlands Wellington / Albirex Niigata clash awaiting in the semi-finals. In contrast, 2009 League Cup runners-up SAFFC should be relatively pleased with the draw having been drawn at home against either Beijing Guoan Talent or Sengkang Punggol in the quarter-finals. All eyes were on S.League new boys Etoile FC and Beijing Guoan Talent, who have been drawn to face Balestier Khalsa and Sengkang Punggol respectively in the preliminary round. The other two preliminary round matches will see Woodlands Welling

Short Take of the League Cup Final

DPMM fans before the game (snapped outside the Stadium) "Expectations are high and the whole Brunei are exciting about it." said Aiqbal, a fan specially flew from Brunei to catch Brunei DPMM in action in their first quest for sliverware in their maiden S.League season.
