When they started the new A-League competition here, the pay-tv broadcaster (Foxtel) who bought the rights to the national league would only do so if they got basicaly exclusive rights to national team games. Now we can see the women's, olympic sides, and world cup proper on free to air, but if you want to watch the national team, which by rightst belongs to everybody, you have to pay.
