[Feature] The man in the middle...

You know being the referee and linesman is always the unappreciative job in football, as through the snaps of below, we came to realize it's a tough assignment indeed. LEADING THE PLAYERS OUT... The day in office begins when the men in the middle lead his fellow officials and the teams out from the tunnel to the field. THE CUSTOMARY PLEASANTRIES ... Next of course is to ensure both teams having the pre-match pleasantries (hand-shaking) with each individual player before the kick-off COIN-TOSS ... The coin tossing is the important part of the game (of course) to decide who will be kick off the match and also remind the both skippers the importance of fair play and stick to the rules. Video Referee - not always the BEST but viable, however....

Sad for the fact that a negative story as such will hit the front pages and common folks would then take notice of the local game for the wrong reasons. Days after black Sunday, Leonard Thomas, the sports editor of TODAY urged the Football of Association of Singapore (FAS) to make a bold initiative by implementing the use of video at the matches to address this nagging issue (pictured above). However, one must bear in mind that using such technology may not necessarily solve the issue overnight. Furthermore, several factors need to be taken care of should the league authority decide to push ahead. LOGISTIC ISSUES Soon expensive equipment have to be installed and more manpower will have to be deployed on match days if the league authority decides to give the go-ahead. Are we ready for this in the unfavourable financial climate when prudence is the key? ADDITIONAL TIME TO BE INCURRED The game has to be halted should the referee decide to consult the video referee. Time must be added on t

Something referee can't be wrong with - deciding who kick off as it's the coin that determine It's something never happened before but now it's being brought to the limelight after the chairman of Tampines Rovers, Mr Teo Hock Seng, had decided to voice out as he can't take it anymore. "The standard of football is improving but not the referee's!" as he lamented to the media. Certainly, one has to put themselves in Teo's shoes to feel that sense of bitterness after some refereeing decisions marred the outcome of the Stags' encounters against the uniformed duo that severely did unnecessary damages to their title challenge. Match officials may not necessary have the best view like some fans do Ironically, it was some dubious decisions took place centerstage as well in their victory over Woodlands Wellington (judging from the strong reactions from the benches and the terraces) on Monday. Suddenly, it just triggered an open discussion that would nor

Interesting session with the referees...

Not that long ago, I was privileged to be at the seminar organized by the FAS Referees Committee. The aim of the get-together session with the referees, coaches, media, and officials was aimed to foster better understanding between various parties pertaining to issues related to the laws of the game. It was a wonderful session as attendees benefited from this short but informative session, which helped in understanding the challenges faced by the match officials in today's game. Some pictures snapped during the seminar FAS Referees Committee Chairman Mr Jeffrey Beh kicked start the session with a short opening speech. The Speakers of the seminar - Mr Shamsul Maidin and Mr John Chia John was the first speaker with everybody's "favourite" law - OFFSIDE Shamsul covered the Laws of Foul and Misconduct, he quoted a lot of incidents from his vast match officiating experience to highlight the topic he covered.
