Thava's plead

Happened to pop in to sneak a peep at one of the teams' introductory press conference.

Balestier Khalsa was the team that presented itself to the media at Jalan Besar.

Right from the start, the Tigers' vice-chairman S Thavaneson did not minced his words as he bemoaned the short-comings of the game's youth development in this country.

Stressed that it's not only Balestier that facing this problem but many of the smaller clubs.

Thava, as he is popularly known, lamented that once a player being nurtured by one of those smaller clubs, would never see him return to his nurturing club after national service due to various factors like:-

• Signing on as a civil-servant (i.e.: police or army regular), while serving his national service.


• Snapped up by some of those bigger clubs upon completing his NS or contractual obligation with his club.

Citing this example, he mentioned some clubs virtually not focusing much effort on developing young players.

As such, he pleading the media to highlight and hope all parties will come forward to address this issue for the betterment for the game's future here.

On the hindsight, he hopes the success of the national team in the Asean football championship could serve as a "platform" for better things to come in terms of fans' interest and better media coverage.

Too bad, times running for me as I exited the venue before everything is over :(

I'm sure those who saw Sengkang Punggol's road to the pre-season SingTel League Cup would agreed that their luck simply ran out when and where it mattered the most - the FINAL.

Who would blame them for beaming that confident smile when they were up against the northern powerhouse - Woodlands Wellington.

Alas, things went according to the script and handed the Rams their deserving first major trophy win since the league started in 1996

Was at the Jalan Besar Stadium yesterday to see the Olympic qualifier between Singapore and Pakistan.

Kudos to the visiting side as they shown courage and grit to overcome the one-goal deficit to beat their much-fancied opponents.

Here's one of the press boxs made available (The usual spot was occupied by the foreign media on the first day).

Alfred Riedl, the Austrian coach of Vietnam viewed his concern on playing their last fixture on the artificial turf of the Jalan Besar Stadium.

Received the good news, via SMS, that we made in to the final after defeated the Malaysians with the help of the legendary "Kallang Roar".

Let's cast aside the external factors that clouded the match that will decided who will be the football kings of the Asean region.

Isn't it sad to note that some selfish parties been making use of the game to hype up those unnecessary tensions between these countries, till recently been cordial and friendly.

But let's not brood over it, as football suppose to be a game that unites all human mankind, not a tool to cause conflicts and frictions
